How to Read the Test

The result of a CA125 test will show whether levels of CA125 are elevated in the blood. If CA125 levels drop during treatment, it typically means that the patient is responding to therapy. If they rise, the patient may not be responding. If CA125 levels are high again after treatment is complete, it may be an indication that cancer has recurred.

The CA125 test is just one of several diagnostic tools that is used to determine the presence of cancer. The test may need to be repeated to validate the results, as elevated CA125 levels can be caused by other, noncancerous conditions, such as pregnancy, menstruation, endometriosis, and fibroids. Patients should keep a record of their test results including the generation of the test (CA125 or CA125 II), manufacturer of the assay, and type of assay or analysis that was done. Since using different manufacturers may lead to differences in results, it is important to use the same manufacturer for repeat tests.
